Spring Activities

It is hard to believe we are just a few days away from the vernal (spring) equinox.  We have been blessed with exceptional weather over the last couple of weeks.  The trees are coming out, the azaleas are blooming and the birds have begun their courtship and mating activities.

A Chickadee pair, well the female, has been working hard today on building her nest.  The male follows her when she heads out in search of material.  Her choice seems to be the moss that is growing on some oak trees.  She has been steadily working at picking it off then coming back with a mouth full.  If she sees me watching, she will wait in a nearby tree before entering the box.

The pair of Red-shouldered Hawks have been very busy hunting and doing some nest repair.  The warm weather has brought out the frogs and they are hanging out around the pond and hunting frogs several times a day.

Yesterday they mated several times really keeping a fuss all day.

  1. Great photos, as usual, Paula. Love the chickadee. Do you have bluebirds yet?
